What it does
Twelve scales on any root
Minor and major pentatonic, blues, major, natural, harmonic and melodic minor, and the modes: Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian.
Notes or degrees
Read each position as a note name, or as its degree in the scale: 1, ♭3, 5. The root is always amber.
Twelve frets or twenty-four
The first octave to learn the shapes, the full neck to join them up.
Drawn for your guitar
Six, seven or eight strings, in the tuning you set in your profile. Tune down and the notes move; the neck moves with them.
How to use it
- 01
Pick a root
Twelve buttons under the neck, C to B.
- 02
Pick a scale
The neck lights every note of it, the root in amber.
- 03
Tap and listen
Every lit note plays. Switch to degrees to see how the scale is built.
Questions
Which scale should I learn first on guitar?
The minor pentatonic. It has five notes, it sits under most rock and blues solos, and the blues scale and the natural minor are the same shape with notes added.
What do the numbers mean?
They are degrees: each note counted from the root. 1 is the root, ♭3 a minor third, 5 the fifth. The same numbers describe the scale in any key, which is why players think in them.
Does it show scale positions or boxes?
Not yet. It shows the scale over the whole neck; positions are on the list.
